The Final Empire - I finally read it!

Ok, I know, I know. You are a science fiction/fantasy nerd and you are JUST NOW reading Mistborn!?

Well, ya. I read a lot, A LOT, when I was a kid. Then, like so many millennials out there, I kind of lost my way in my twenties due to, well, oh so many things. Then I got married, had kids, and rediscovered my absolute love with reading. Along with many other things, like crafting, and writing - but that's another story.

Today, we are talking about the Mistborn series, specifically The Final Empire aka Book 1. And boy oh boy is it a doosy. There has been this new push or maybe it has been around for a while and I have just been out of the biz for so long that I didn't see it but the Romantasy books. I have never been a big romance book fan. I want the story, the grit, the backstabbing, the war, the mayhem, the conflicted characters, the depth, the world-building, the PLOTS, the world-building (did I mention that already? 😂). Anyways, I feel rather dismayed to find that these books are becoming harder to find as the Romantasy books are dominating the market right now. It's like those who love romance all of sudden decided they like wizards and dragons as well so boom all the books are now brainless nitwits completely engulfed in some love V with two similar yet very different and dangerous men one being the good guy and the other being the obvious bad guy who has a hidden good side that just no one sees but our main character with some dragons and magic on the side. I feel like I am dooped everytime I pick up a book nowadays.

Don't get wrong, if this type of book is for you then that's awesome! Reading is reading and if it brings you joy and peace then go for it. It just doesn't do that for me. But you know what does?

Freaking Brandon F-ing Sanderson and his ridiculous way to plot out and build an amazing storyline full of plots and subplots, characters that have depth and backstories that make sense, build up that keeps you intrigued but does not vomit the entire story in one chapter. He holds on to tiny pieces of information to bring them back up later when you least expect it wrapping the story all up together nicely. Its the way he makes the secondary characters all seem real and have lives and motivations that are realistic. It's how he architects his way up to the edifice of the story only to get you right to the edge to then make you realize that you aren't even on a building at all. The man is a wordsmith and gifted story teller. I only dream of being able to craft a story as good as his or even just partially. Ill take that.

I felt all of the emotions with the Final Empire just to have those end up wrapped up all nicely with a bow at the end right along with the story. All except for frustration. Frustration that the story ended. Frustration that I couldn't continue on with these characters whom I had grown to love. But what is crazy, is that The Final Empire has that "romance" factor however, I found that the way Sanderson crafted it was just enough to be to my liking and not overwhelming. On top of the fact that the characters did not get blindsided by love that it was ALL they thought about, even though it is in there quite a bit.

I loved the first book of the The Mistborn series and I am currently in the middle of reading Book 2. Updates when that one gets finished. So far, its building just like the first - which means so many twists and turns to come! I cant' wait.

Updates when I finish that one. It's a slow process as my husband and I only read a chapter a night.

As for book 1, if you have not read it, GO! RUN! LEAP! SPRINT! UNICYCLE! to the nearest bookstore and buy yourself a copy! Whatever you need to do, to get your hands on a copy and read it. Go ahead and just buy the book. We did. We don't regret it.
